Fanciful Fruits and Flowers: An Introduction to Still Life Painting with a Focus on Pattern and Design-Part I

If you have wanted to try your hand at painting a still life of fruit and or flowers, then this is a perfect workshop for you.

The focus will be on emphasizing bold shapes and the role of patterns in the composition and design of your painting. Nancy will demo and get you started. She is a great teacher.

The work of the French painter Matisse will be discussed as it relates to the incorporation of decorative patterns and use of bright bold colors. Value relationships and color mixing will be addressed as well. Supplies for this workshop are included. An additional lab fee of $25 will be assessed to cover the cost of your two panels and use of paint and any additional materials. Just show up with a smock. You're welcome to bring some of your own materials as well. Open to beginning and intermediate art students. Everyone will leave with at least one painting.

Description: Using photo references supplied by the instructor, students will focus on how to plan and organize a painting using acrylic paint. Emphasis will be on the composition, and design of the page, a defined light source, value placement and color harmony. Personal expression and interpretation of the subject matter is encouraged. The first part of the class students will coat the panel a light /value color. After the demo they can begin to draw the design with white chalk pencils. Instructor will be demoing on her own easel and will provide handouts with her instructions included. She will supply the white chalk pencils, painters tape, canvas paper (for testing colors,) and both black and white color references for the floral studies.
