DAN BECK~2 DAY Landscape & Figurative "Impressionistic" Painting Class

Renowned artist, DAN BECK, from Wilmington, will come for a two-day intensive. He will demo each day and work along with the students, assisting them along the way when needed.

During the class demos, Dan will engage students and teach a more advanced way of impressionistic thinking, while using strokes and colors to allow his subject matter to appear. He will explain how working with composition, color theory, and the play of light and darks, can create a well-balanced painting. Each student will get guided help, showing them how to simplify their composition, give it meaning, and how to work with color to show atmospheric perspective. All students should paint live from model on morning of day two, however, the class will work on landscapes day one- use your own references or use instructor's each day.

For this class, we are suggesting some limited experience, using a brush and palette knife and some color mixing and working with your medium of choice- acrylic or oil. Dan will be working with oils. Advanced students are also welcome. Everyone will be painting using our table easels.

This class is limited to the first 8 students, allowing for more one and one time with instructor in our intimate setting. Students are responsible for all their own supplies.

Suggested supplies: canvases to work on table easel only (Max substrate size 12x16) a variety of brushes, warm/cool colors, water/solvent containers, (odorless solvents/cleaners only, like Gamsol for oils) rags, pallet knives, gloves, baby wipes for brush cleanup, etc-. We will have dump buckets for acrylic water, however all solvents must be in an airtight container and taken home at the end of the 2 days of classroom sessions. Also, very important, you will be taking your wet oil painting home each day, so please prepare and bring a box to transport them to your car.

Plan on good starts or completing 2-4 paintings. Work from your own photos or work from Dan’s references for the head studies and landscapes.

A short lunch break will be taken during each day. There is a refrigerator to use for your lunch. Bring a closed lidded drink and we will have filtered water to refill it. We will also have lights snacks for all during lunchtime. Feel free to bring a snack to share. We will have some as well.

NOTE: COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN- NO PROBLEM- McWade's INN IS RIGHT NEXT DOOR! Downtown Clayton has many restaurants within walking distance to our gallery and the Inn, however for the class, we suggest bringing a lunch for our fridge.
